Mifepristone is a medication commonly used in combination with misoprostol for an abortion. Mifepristone is a steroidal antiprogestogen, it may also be used together with misoprostol for terminating an early pregnancy. This combination is 97% effective during the first 63 days of pregnancy. It is usually taken by mouth.

Mifepristone along with misoprostol is used for medical abortion as it’s effective and appropriate at any gestational age. Mifepristone alone is less effective, resulting in abortion within 1-2 weeks in 8% to 46% of pregnancies. The effectiveness is greater than 90% if misoprostol is given after mifepristone.

Cushing’s Syndrome

Mifepristone is also used for the treatment of high blood sugar caused by high cortisol levels in the blood, in adults with endogenous Cushing’s syndrome who have type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.


Misoprostol is a medication used to cause an abortion and treat postpartum bleeding due to poor contraction of the uterus. It can be used alone or with mifepristone for terminating an early pregnancy. Its effectiveness for abortion is between 66% to 90%.
